CLAN CREST BADGES / BROOCH

In Scotland's turbulent past it was the custom for Clan Chiefs to give their followers a metal plate of their crest, to be worn as a badge of allegiance which fastened to their clothing with a strap and buckle.

When not in use the belt was coiled around the crest and this convention is used in the clan crest badges of today.

Only a Clan Chief may wear the crest without the strap and buckle.

These are lovely small (1” / 2.5cm) Clan Crest badges / brooches.

The Clan Crest Badge shown below is that of the Clan Campbell. The boar’s head crest of the chief, the Duke of Argyll, is surrounded by the strap and buckle. Inscribed on the strap is the Campbell motto “Ne obliviscaris” (Forget not). The boar’s head relates to a legend about an early progenitor of the Campbells.
